“Addressing the lacuna of sports law regulations” was the topic of discussion at a conference hosted by the Society of India Law Firms in New Delhi on 24 and 25 July.
Stressing the need for a legal framework for sports governance, Lalit Bhasin, the society’s president, said: “Personally I am against too many rules and regulations, but there has to be some sort of mechanism in place even if it is self-regulatory. A statutory body which is autonomous and can keep sports federations in check is what India needs at the moment.”
The conference was inaugurated by Justice JS Verma, a former chief justice of India, and attended by lawyers such as Fali Nariman, KN Bhatt, Rajiv Datta, Jyoti Sagar and Rahul Mehra and sports journalists Pradeep Magazine and Desh Gaurav Sekhri. The group discussed concerns associated with legal issues in staging major sporting events such as the upcoming Commonwealth Games, the recent IPL controversy, and sports IP in India.
