Employees in the technology sector whose workspaces have been registered under the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) rules can continue to work from home until the end of 2023, according to a Department of Commerce notification to the IT and ITes industries.

A detailed standard operating procedure has been released for employers to streamline the implementation of the new norms. The liberalised working environment has been extended until the end of 2023 to benefit employees working across metropolitan, tier one and tier two cities.

Employees can now inform their superiors about their continuance of working from home, rather than seeking permission to do so. Employers, on their part, can also choose to adopt the hybrid work model to enhance productivity and efficiency.

The new rules were drafted keeping in mind the change in the working environment post covid-19. NASSCOM, the IT industry body, and other senior industry leaders were consulted, said commerce department officials.
