Job Description

The Legal Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is seeking qualified lawyers to fill a Counsel/Senior Counsel position in its division (i.e., the Country Unit) in charge of applying the law of the Fund on matters pertaining to country operations and general policies of the Fund. This position is based at IMF headquarters in Washington, D.C. However, some travel to IMF member countries is expected.

The IMF is an international organization with a membership of 190 countries. The IMF Legal Department’s Country Unit offers lawyers a unique opportunity to bridge their financial or commercial law background in private or public practice (particularly experience in financial transactions, regulation and insolvency) with public international law and policy. This may be one of the most rewarding experiences of the lawyer’s career by contributing to: enhancing the IMF Legal Department’s capacity to provide legal advice in support of the Fund’s regulatory and financial operations in its member countries; assisting member countries in strengthening their legal frameworks, particularly in the areas of exchange systems, sovereign and private debt restructuring, and public governance and integrity; and also supporting the IMF’s efforts to improve the functioning of the global economy.

Duties and Responsibilities

As a member of the IMF’ s legal team, the lawyer’s would advise on issues such as: (i) country-specific and general legal issues under the law of the Fund and international law; (ii) IMF policies, including in the areas of IMF surveillance, use of Fund resources, IMF governance, the IMF’s jurisdiction over members’ exchange systems, transparency, among other areas relevant to the IMF’s mandate; (iii) reforms of national laws of member countries in areas such as exchange systems, insolvency and creditors’ rights, private and sovereign debt restructuring, and public governance and integrity; and (iv) ad hoc policy-related assignments, as assigned by the General Counsel and Director of the Legal Department, the Assistant General Counsel in charge of the Unit, or another officer designated by the Director. Under the supervision and guidance of the Director of the Legal Department, you would provide advice in these areas of law within the institution as well as to the authorities of any of the IMF’s 190 member countries and contribute to IMF policy analyses and development.

Qualifications

Candidates must possess a recognized university and advanced degree in law (i.e., LLM, JD, LLB, or equivalent), and must be eligible to practice law in one or more jurisdictions. In addition, candidates must possess a minimum of four years of professional legal experience (i.e., working as a licensed law professional) in financial/commercial legal practice, central banking, banking regulation, or government. Candidates must possess a yearning to learn, an interest in international legal and public policy issues, a high degree of initiative and adaptability, excellent research and analytical skills, a track record of working effectively in inter-disciplinary teams, and excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Fluency in another major international language would be an asset.
