Merits & Tree Law Offices has appointed Roy Rong, Susan Li, Carys Li and Hu Tianxiong as equity partners at its Beijing and Qingdao offices, strengthening the firm’s capabilities in investment and financing, M&A, restructuring and insolvency, dispute resolution and intellectual property (IP).
Rong joins the Beijing office, bringing experience from both private practice and in-house legal roles. Before entering private practice, he served as director of the regulations division in the legal affairs department at Sinomach and later as chief legal counsel at Kangde Xin Composite Material Group. He subsequently practised at Sunland Law Firm and Yingke Law Firm.
His practice focuses on international trade, overseas infrastructure and electromechanical engineering, and dispute resolution. He has led or participated in dozens of major projects across several continents, covering engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), build-operate-transfer (BOT), and independent power producer (IPP) projects. He has also long advised Chinese companies on outbound investment and international arbitration.
Susan Li joins the Qingdao office, and is qualified to practise in both China and Australia. Before joining Merits & Tree, she was a senior partner and chair of the management committee at the Qingdao office of Jingsh Law Firm, and once practised at Australian law firm BRH Lawyers. She has also served as legal director and government affairs director for Southeast Asia and Greater China at Kellogg Company and served as vice-chair of the Asia-Pacific regional committee and as Asia-Pacific tax director at Kreston Global.
With more than 20 years of experience, she advises on investment and financing, M&A, tax, government regulation and compliance. She has represented domestic and international companies in matters involving international trade, IP, commercial disputes and international arbitration, and has led legal work on cross-border acquisitions, joint venture establishment, corporate restructurings and business disposals.
Carys Li, who joins the Beijing office, previously practised at Tiantai Law Firm and later served as secretary-general of the international practice committee at Blossom & Credit Law Firm.
Her practice focuses on investment and financing, IP commercialisation and shareholder disputes. She has led M&A transactions involving music and entertainment companies as well as foreign equity investments, advising on the full transaction process from due diligence and transaction structuring to negotiations across the entertainment, advertising and internet technology sectors.
Before joining Merits & Tree’s Beijing office, Hupractised at Dacheng Law Offices and JunHe.
He focuses on corporate rescue and insolvency matters, primarily acting as an insolvency administrator to help distressed companies complete restructurings or conduct efficient liquidations. In recent years, he has participated in several restructuring cases involving listed companies and large corporate groups.
