Baker & McKenzie has announced the election of six partners across its China offices, and the arrival of a further new partner from Shearman & Sterling.

Among those newly promoted, Shanghai-based Victor Gu focuses on mergers and acquisitions and general corporate work. In Beijing, Liu Jinghua focuses on PRC taxation and international tax planning. Both Gu and Liu are admitted as attorneys-at-law in New York and hold the PRC bar qualification certificate.

CY Leung, a partner in the firm’s securities group in Hong Kong, retired at the end of June after 24 years with the firm. And in other news, former chair of Baker & McKenzie Christine Lagarde was appointed head of the International Monetary Fund for a five-year term commencing on 5 July. Lagarde replaces compatriot Dominique Strauss-Kahn who resigned in May after being arrested in New York over allegations of sexual assault.
