Yoshihiro Takatori, a Tokyo-based international dispute resolution veteran and a former Japan disputes practice head at Paul Hastings and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, has joined Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu as a special adviser.

Takatori, who was admitted in Japan in 1992 and in New York in 1999, has practised as a partner at Kasumigaseki International Law Office since 2020.

Nagashima Ohno, one of Japan’s four largest law firms, confirmed to Asia Business Law Journal that Takatori was now affiliated with the firm, but declined to comment further on the addition of the disputes veteran to the team.

On a 2 September post on LinkedIn, Takatori announced his transfer to Nagashima Ono as a special adviser, and that he would “continue to work closely with Kasumigaseki International Law in the areas of legal services and public interest projects, and to serve as an international arbitrator and mediator”.

Earlier in his legal career, Takatori practised as a partner heading the dispute resolution practice at the Tokyo office of Paul Hastings and Orrick, and also served as the head of the global Japan practice during his time at Orrick. After close to two decades spent practising at the two US firms combined, the disputes veteran joined Kasumigaseki International Law Office in 2020.

Specialising in international litigation and alternative dispute resolution, Takatori is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, while serving as the executive director of the Japan Association of Arbitrators and the president of the Japan Institute for International Arbitration Research and Training, among other roles outside of his legal practice.

Besides Japan, Nagashima Ohno has also strengthened its international dispute resolution capabilities overseas in recent years, such as the hire of Singapore-qualified disputes partner Justin Ee for its Singapore office from TSMP Law Corporation in October 2022.
