Tim Gardner, Weil’s Hong Kong-based managing partner, left the law firm to join investment firm PAG as its group general counsel in April.

“It has been a privilege to co-head the Weil, Gotshal & Manges Asia private equity team over the past six plus years,” Gardner wrote on his LinkedIn profile.

“It is now my great honour to join PAG as group general counsel. I am grateful to Weil and excited for this new chapter with PAG.”

Gardner has honed more than nine years of experience at Weil, and he is a specialist in sectors from corporate and commercial, cross-border investment, M&A to private equity, as well as venture capital and funds.

Before joining Weil in 2015, Gardner was a partner at Latham & Watkins’ Hong Kong office. He has worked in the US for financial services firms, Goldman Sachs and SPA Capital, and law firm Davis Polk.

Last year, Gardner took part in the USD3.16 billion take-private acquisition of Chinadata Group by Bain Capital. He led the team to advise Citigroup Global, the financial adviser of the special committee.

China Business Law Journal recognised Gardner as among the Visionaries on its 2023-24 A-List.

His departure came just months after Weil closed its Beijing office in December and the firm is currently in discussions to shut down its Shanghai branch.

Weil’s spokesman previously said the firm might consolidate its Asia operations through the Hong Kong office. Weil’s website says its Hong Kong branch currently has five partners.
