Tokyo-based TMI Associates has inked a partnership with SY Teo & Co to establish a base in Kuala Lumpur, marking the Japanese firm’s second Malaysian tie-up, extending its presence in the Southeast Asian nation.
Partner Hiroyasu Umeda, who is currently working in the Singapore office of TMI Associates, will be stationed at the Kuala Lumpur base.
SY Teo & Co is a Malaysian law firm headed by Sze Yi Teo, a foreign attorney at TMI Associates’ Singapore office. Teo is qualified as a lawyer in Malaysia and Singapore, and has extensive experience in M&A and other corporate matters.
Since September 2015, TMI has been collaborating with Malaysian law firm Chooi & Company’s Japan desk while being involved in various matters including M&A, litigation, real estate development, labour, fraud investigation and intellectual property rights through the setup of a Malaysia desk in the Japanese firm’s Singapore office.
Going forward, TMI’s business alliance with Chooi & Company will continue to handle disputes, projects and other major cases, while providing more flexible and comprehensive legal services through the new Malaysia base under the firm’s tie-up with SY Teo & Co.
