Swarup Kumar has left his equity partnership at IP specialists Remfry & Sagar to set up his own firm Kumar & Sardana Associates in Gurugram.

Kumar, an IP attorney with more than 20 years’ experience, will be the new firm’s sole managing partner. Advocates Anurag Raghav and Ruchi Sardana, with experience in civil litigation and IP, will join the core team. The firm is in the process of hiring IP lawyers, technical assistants and paralegals.

In an exclusive chat with IBLJ, Kumar said, “Kumar & Sardana Associates has been founded as a boutique intellectual property and technology law firm focused on rendering customised, high quality and business friendly techno-legal advice to clients.

“We understand that one size does not fit all and the needs of each client is unique. Our idea, therefore, is not to provide standardised run-of-the-mill IP services prevalent in the industry, but to offer them specialised, result-oriented and cost manageable services in IP, technology and law.”

The firm’s specialty areas include drafting of patent specifications, filings and prosecutions across all technology verticals, working of patents, renewals etc. It will provide advice on IP matters including patentability and/or patent eligibility of inventions, freedom to operate, assignments and licensing of inventions, searches, oppositions, revocations as well as patent litigation.

“With Kumar & Sardana Associates’ core team in place, I will be happy to invite like-minded and motivated patent, design and trademark professionals and colleagues to come on board as we go along. In fact, as we speak, our website is getting updated and we shall reach out to the world shortly,” Kumar told IBLJ.

In October 2022, Kumar was elected as the deputy secretary general of the International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys (FICPI – Fédération International des Conseils en Propriété Intellectuelle) for a tenure of three years. He is the first Indian IP attorney to become part of the FICPI Bureau since it was founded in 1906. The FICPI is based in Switzerland and has more than 5,000 members in almost 80 jurisdictions.

The core team at Kumar & Sardana Associates has a cumulative experience of more than four decades in IP and civil litigation. The firm’s vision is to create a positive, open and collaborative work culture, and to ensure diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility for all members.
