Shashank Garg brings 15 years of experience to his new role as he begins his tenure as chair of the ICC India Arbitration Group (IAG).

Garg’s experience covers dispute resolution, specialising in international and domestic commercial arbitration and litigation.

Speaking on the new role, he said, “As I take the reins, I am aware of the esteemed individuals who have preceded me in this position, and I must say, they’ve left behind some rather big shoes to fill.

“I feel that I am not just inheriting responsibilities, but becoming a part of a legacy that spans a century. I hope that the India Arbitration Group is able to play a significant role in this dynamic phase of Indian arbitration jurisprudence, which can be stated to be the renaissance of arbitration in India.”

Garg began his career at Harish Salve’s chambers in 2008 and later worked at the chambers of Parag Tripathi, the additional solicitor general of India. Later, he established Accendo Law Partners. He is also a central government standing counsel since 2023.

“Apart from acting as a counsel, I have had the opportunity to sit as an arbitrator in more than 30 domestic arbitrations wherein I was appointed by the high court of Delhi and the Delhi International Arbitration Centre. Along with this, I have also sat as sole arbitrator in a few international commercial arbitrations (ad-hoc as well as institutional),” he added.

“In 2023, I had the good fortune to be appointed as central government standing counsel for conducting central government litigations before the high court of Delhi and as nominated counsel for the high court of Delhi.”

Garg is also the author of the book Alternative Dispute Resolution: The Indian Perspective, and later edited the Arbitrator’s Handbook published by Lexis Nexis.
