Herbert Smith Freehills has appointed partner Nanda Lau to lead its mainland offices, reporting to Hong Kong-based China managing partner Matt Emsley.

Lau, the head of corporate in China, said it is the right time to refresh the structure by aligning the only two mainland offices in Beijing and Shanghai to better serve their expansion ambitions in China.

Lau started her long-standing career at Herbert Smith Freehills in 1993 in the Hong Kong office. She covers a wide range of corporate and commercial work, including cross-border M&A transactions, foreign direct investment, private equity, joint ventures and corporate restructurings in China. She also advises clients on regulatory, general corporate and commercial matters.

Lau has represented SF Holding on a RMB5 billion (USD697 million) acquisition of German logistics group DHL’s supply chain operations in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.

She also advised British American Tobacco’s corporate venture capital arm on its investment in a Chinese domestic private equity fund through a bespoke deal structure, the first of its kind in China.

Her other high-profile clients include Associated British Foods, Diageo, Jaguar Land Rover and Hua Hong Semiconductor.
