Introduction

Michael Liu is a senior partner at Dentons Law Offices (Shanghai) and heads the firm’s IP group there. Liu has nearly 20 years of experience in international arbitration and commercial litigation. He has won: The award of 2020 Asia-Pacific Intellectual Property Leading Lawyer by Asialaw; 2020 Recommended Intellectual Property Lawyer in Asia-Pacific by The legal 500; the 2019 A-List of China’s Elite 100 Lawyers by China Business Law Journal; the 2018-2019 China Intellectual Property Litigation Elite Team TOP 10; the 2015-2018 Shanghai Outstanding Lawyer nomination award; the first to fifth Lujiazui Forum Legal Individual Award, etc.

Liu has served as legal counsel and provided legal services for dozens of large state-owned enterprises, institutions and foreign-funded enterprises. His roles include: A legal consultant of the People’s Government of Shanghai Fengxian district; director of the intellectual property committee of the Shanghai Lawyers Association; director of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Service Industry Association; a high-tech and project financing consultant of the Shanghai Science and Technology Commission; a member of the Intellectual Property Research Association of Shanghai Law Society; a mediator of the Shanghai Economic and Trade Commercial Mediation Centre, and a member of the Intellectual Property Association of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone.

Liu has repeatedly participated in expert argumentation as a member of the Shanghai High People’s Court’s expert demonstration committee. He has also served as a tutor for the Shanghai Jiaotong University’s Kaiyuan Law School, the Lawyer School of East China University of Political Science and Law, and the Shanghai Lawyer School.

By being familiar with the characteristics of a company’s operation and IP protection, Liu has designed IP protection programmes for enterprises, improved the corporate governance structure of enterprises, standardised the operation mode of enterprises, and won “Well-known Trademark” for many enterprises through administrative and litigation methods. The honour of the well-known trademark has enhanced the brand influence and popularity of the company.

He has also actively promoted the operation of IP capitalisation, and provides services for the fund and asset management plan, and industrial fund, for the Eastern Asset Management Company, the trust company and the listed company. This accumulated service amount is nearly RMB100 billion. Liu has also been responsible for joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, and equity transfers for large companies. He has repeatedly represented companies’ equity disputes, debt disputes, and IP cases such as trademarks, patents, copyrights and unfair competition, and has successfully completed litigation tasks for his clients.
