Introduction

James Lu is a co-founder of Cooley’s Shanghai office and the head of its corporate practice, focusing on Asia-related corporate and securities transactions including foreign direct investment, venture capital financing, private equity investment, M&A and public offerings. Lu also has broad experience advising clients on complex cross-border commercial transactions involving unique structures and contractual arrangements designed to comply with legal requirements in multiple jurisdictions, including licensing, joint venture, manufacturing and distribution arrangements in the life sciences and high-tech industries in Asia. Lu is a frequent speaker at local and international conferences, and has spoken extensively on topics relating to Asia’s venture capital and capital market environment.

Prior to joining Cooley, Lu held marketing management and business development positions in the life sciences industry. He focused on commercialization, and had more than a decade of experience working with scientists and technology transfer professionals to transform ideas into successful products.

Lu is a native Mandarin speaker and is fluent in English. He holds a JD (summa cum laude, Valedictorian, Order of the Coif, Outstanding Service Award) from the University of San Diego School of Law, a Master of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Science and Technology of China.
Lu is registered to practise before the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) in California.
