A 72-year old activist went on hunger strike following a spate of corruption charges against the Indian administration. Anna Hazare, a campaigner in Delhi, vowed to give up all food and drink until the Indian government passes an effective anti-corruption law.
Hazare has received support from figures like retired police officer Kiran Bedi, civil liberties lawyer Prashant Bhushan and former cricketer Kapil Dev. The government has promised to discuss an anti-corruption bill, however, Hazare demanded that civil society be involved in formulating the new policy.
“I shall be sitting on an indefinite fast from April 5 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi to persuade the government to enact the Jan Lokpal Bill, which is a strong anti-corruption law drafted by some of the best brains in the country including Justice Santosh Hegde, Arvind Kejriwal, Prashant Bhushan, Shanti Bhushan and many others,” he said.
