Charles Russell Speechlys has transitioned from a foreign registered law firm in Hong Kong to a registered Hong Kong firm from 1 December 2020. Marking this new milestone, the firm also welcomed experienced litigator Ray Ng to the team.
The new move will enable the firm to practise both Hong Kong law and the laws of England and Wales under the Charles Russell Speechlys name.
The London-headquartered firm previously advised on foreign law in Hong Kong since September 2017 via a formal association with local law firm Jonathan Mok Legal. That partnership ended on 30 November.
“We are delighted to reconfirm our commitment to Hong Kong and the wider region for the long term,” said Tom Shaw, head of Charles Russell Speechlys in Hong Kong.
“We’ve had three very successful years as a foreign law firm specialising in private wealth advice and dispute resolution since opening our Hong Kong office in 2017. Our localisation as a Hong Kong firm is a natural next step towards achieving our ambitions in this important global wealth centre, and we look forward to announcing further expansion in coming months.”
Hiring Ng was one of the firm’s steps toward expansion in the region. He joined from Ogier in Hong Kong, where he was head of dispute resolution for Asia. Ng is a registered foreign lawyer with the Law Society of Hong Kong and specialises in the resolution of complex, high-value multijurisdictional commercial disputes. He has over 30 years’ experience of handling onshore and offshore disputes in the UK, the Caribbean and Asia.
“Within just three years of opening in Hong Kong, Charles Russell Speechlys have firmly established their credentials here as one of the region’s leading specialists in private wealth and dispute resolution,” said Ng.
