SAM advises Byju’s on latest investment round

Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co (SAM) advised online learning platform Byju’s when it recently received a US$500 million round of funding from Silver Lake Partners and existing investors Tiger Global Management, General Atlantic Service and Owl Ventures.

AZB & Partners advised Silver Lake and Tiger Global. The deal was announced on 8 September and closed on 11 September.

SAM’s team comprised its Bengaluru-based partner Roshan Thomas and senior associate Pranav Raju (general corporate), and partner Abhay Sharma and senior associate Priyanka Jain (tax).

AZB & Partners’ team advising Silver Lake comprised partner Roxanne Anderson and senior associate Saloni Bhandari. The team advising Tiger Global comprised partners Ashwath Rau, Srinath Dasari, Bharath Budholia, Nanditha Gopal and Aditya Singh Chandel, and senior associates Malaveeka Chakravarthy and Aishwarya Gopalakrishnan.

Byju’s, which is the operational name of Bengaluru-based Think & Learn, has so far this year raised around US$1 billion. The company said that since the lockdown it has seen over 20 million new students start learning from its platform for free, and its app has over 64 million registered students and 4.2 million annual paid subscriptions.
