Reed Smith hires India practice co-head

I Bobby Majumder

Former Perkins Coie partner I Bobby Majumder has joined Reed Smith as co-head of the firm’s India practice and managing partner of its office in Dallas, US. “The decision to move was, in part, based on a desire to practise in a firm that has a truly global footprint,” Majumder told India Business Law Journal.

Majumder was the Dallas office managing partner at Perkins Coie and the firmwide chair of the India practice.

“Perkins Coie is a fine US firm but they have no European presence and only a small presence in East Asia. Joining Reed Smith allows us to execute a wider variety of mandates for our clients going to India to do deals as well as Indian companies doing business all over the world,” he said.

Majumder will work in the firm’s global corporate practice alongside partners Ryan Preston and Lynwood Reinhardt, who join him from Perkins Coie.

“Having our team at Reed Smith will allow us to more effectively advise on India mandates by bringing our team closer to our India clients. Our offices in London, Dubai, Singapore and Hong Kong plus our full US coverage allow us to provide seamless support for our India clients.”

The move was timed to coincide with Reed Smith’s expansion to Dallas, which saw 16 lawyers including eight partners join from Perkins Coie, Bryan Cave and Bracewell.

“I was impressed with the firm’s insistence that the office is launched by lawyers who are from Texas, have roots in the Dallas-Fort Worth region and have longstanding ties in the community,” said Majumder.

Majumder will co-head the India practice along with London-based arbitration and litigation partner Gautam Bhattacharyya. The London team also includes finance partner Ranajoy Basu.

Majumder’s practice focuses on corporate and securities transactions in the areas of energy, mining, healthcare and information technology.

Among his recent notable deals, Majumder advised metals manufacturer Mishra Dhatu Nigam on the regulation S/rule 144A tranche of its US$67 million initial public offering (IPO) in early 2018 and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers on the regulation S/rule 144A tranche of its US$50 million IPO in late 2018. He also advised on the regulation S/rule 144A tranche of Bharat 22 ETF’s US$3.80 billion new fund offer.

Majumder was named one of the top India-focused lawyers in India Business Law Journal’s International A-List, published in 2019.
