Introduction

Mark Cheng co-heads the Chinese Related Investment Disputes practice at Rajah & Tann Singapore. He specialises in complex commercial disputes, with particular emphasis on shareholders’ and joint venture disputes, often involving high stakes and cross-border elements. He also has a wealth of experience in crisis management, working with and strategising for clients throughout the engagement.

Conversant in Mandarin, Cheng also has a keen appreciation of Chinese business culture. In addition, he has substantial experience representing clients in Greater China in high-profile disputes. Notably, he successfully acted for a Singapore-listed company in relation to a dispute over the ownership of a hospital located in China. He also successfully represented a court-appointed judicial manager of a medical group’s Singapore holding company in pursuing claims against a defendant who had fraudulently siphoned off more than USD100 million through elaborately planned schemes to himself or his nominees in China. This required Cheng to have a good appreciation of the Chinese healthcare and legal systems in dealing with the concerns raised.

Another of his areas of practice is in insolvency and restructuring, having advised debtors, creditors and insolvency practitioners. He also advises high-net-worth individuals and families to address their succession and estate structuring and planning needs.

Cheng has consistently been recognised as a market leading lawyer by prominent legal directories and has been described as a “dynamic and knowledgeable partner, combining legal acumen with commercial awareness”. He was identified as one of the Top 100 Elite Lawyers (Foreign Lawyers) for the Chinese market in The A-List 2022 by China Business Law Journal and acknowledged as a highly regarded restructuring and insolvency lawyer by IFLR1000 Asia-Pacific 2023.
