Introduction

Leo Zhang started his law career at Baker McKenzie’s Beijing and Shanghai offices and has practised law for more than a decade. His practice areas focus on foreign direct investment, cross border M&A, and private equity investment. Zhang has represented multiple Chinese state and private corporations on a number of China outbound investment projects over the years.

He is well-experienced in cross border M&A transactions, advising on numerous complex acquisition projects and helping clients negotiate legal documentation. Zhang has been recognised for his breadth of knowledge and techniques in global M&A transaction documentation and market practices. With his significant expertise in industries such as energy (including new energy) and mining, he has helped international and Chinese clients precisely identify legal risks, design and execute complex transaction structures, and tackle challenging regulatory requirements, by offering commercially practicable and innovative legal solutions. He recently acted for Ganfeng Lithium in the acquisition of the PPG lithium project in Argentina, a deal recognised as among 2022’s “Deals of the Year” by China Business Law Journal.

Zhang has also provided services to multinational corporations in their China investments and carve-out transactions. He has advised multinational corporations on JV deals and the sale of Chinese businesses, where he excelled at combining global transactional practices and Chinese legal and regulatory requirements.

Zhang was honoured as a “Rising Star” by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific in 2022 and 2023 for his achievements in the field of M&A.
