Han Kun Law Offices boosts its criminal capabilities in Shanghai with the addition of former judge Liu Xin, who has honed nearly three decades of experience in this practice area.

Liu was previously a senior partner and director of the criminal practice committee at Grandall Law Firm. He specialises in criminal defence, accusations and compliance, and handles civil-criminal overlap cases and administrative penalties encompassing administrative and civil liability. Liu has successfully dealt with cases involving corruption and bribery, illegal fundraising, contract fraud, smuggling and IP crimes.

Before his tenure at Grandall, Liu was the criminal deputy chief judge at the Shanghai High People’s Court, and the deputy chief judge at Shanghai No. 1 Intermediate People’s Court.

In 2010, he presided over the Rio Tinto espionage case, which led to the conviction of Stern Hu, the former chief representative of the Australian company Rio Tinto in China, and three Chinese colleagues for bribery and trade secret infringements.

Liu has actively contributed to the formulation of many laws and regulations, including the Criminal Procedure Law and its Supreme Court interpretations, rules about securities and futures crimes, and the exclusionary rule of illegal evidence.
