Dear Sir,
We believe that the Indian legal market should be opened to foreign law firms, but in a limited and methodical manner.
Foreign firms should be allowed to practise only foreign law. Since foreign lawyers do not have any formal legal education in India, they should not be allowed to provide legal services on Indian law.
There are two limiting factors on Indian law firms that do not affect foreign counterparts. First, Bar Council of India rules prohibit domestic advocates from advertising or even indicating areas of specialization. Second, under Indian law, firms cannot have more than 20 partners.
