Bird & Bird has taken onboard new corporate partner David Cheng from the now shuttered Hong Kong office of Winston & Strawn, where he practised for close to nine years.

Hiring Cheng from Winston & Strawn, which announced last year its decision to close the Hong Kong office at the start of this month, was a key part of Bird & Bird’s strategy to expand its corporate practice in Greater China and the wider Asia-Pacific region, the firm said.

Cheng, who specialises in advising on IPOs and other capital markets transactions, joined Winston & Strawn as an associate in 2015, having previously practised at DLA Piper as an associate for more than four years.

The Hong Kong-based capital markets lawyer, who also advises on spin-offs, reverse takeovers and privatisations, made partner at Winston & Strawn in 2019 after serving as an of counsel at the US firm for more than two years.

In recent years, Cheng has advised Zhengwei Group Holdings on its listing on the Hong Kong stock exchange, and acted for Karrie International Holdings in spinning off its subsidiary KRP Development Holdings for a separate listing on the city’s bourse.
