Appleby has bolstered its Shanghai teams with the hiring of litigation and restructuring specialist Ben McCosker, formerly a counsel at Mayer Brown’s Hong Kong office.

McCosker, who is admitted in Hong Kong, Bermuda and New South Wales in Australia, will join Appleby as a partner. He brings 16 years of experience to the table, specialising in commercial litigation, restructuring and insolvency.

He is skilled at advising clients on shareholder disputes and handling restructuring transactions for offshore incorporated companies listed in Hong Kong.

Before joining Appleby, McCosker spent two years as a counsel at Mayer Brown’s Hong Kong office, and had previously worked in Bermuda for Walkers and in Sydney for Norton Rose Fulbright.

A new associate, Mandy Qi, and legal manager, Stephanie Wang, also joined Appleby’s Shanghai office at the same time as McCosker.

The Shanghai office had housed five partners before McCosker’s addition. Only Hannah Yao is solely based in Shanghai, while the rest are based in two or more regions.

Yao joined the Shanghai office last August, making Appleby the second offshore law firm with a permanent lawyer based in mainland China after Harneys.
