The Thai Corporate Counsel Association (Thai-CCA) in collaboration with regional law firm Tilleke & Gibbins held its first event of the year on 24 January, delving into the expanding field of AI and technology law in Southeast Asia.
The session commenced with a keynote speech from Dr Sak Segkhoonthod, adviser of digital transactions at Thailand’s Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA).
Segkhoonthod presented a comprehensive and insightful analysis of AI regulation, both within Thailand and around the world, highlighting the challenges that regulators encounter in this field. Further emphasising the critical importance of technology in Thailand’s economic landscape, Segkhoonthod also encouraged current legal experts to take a proactive role in crafting the regulations that oversee AI.
Athistha (Nop) Chitranukroh, partner and head of the technology practice group at Tilleke & Gibbins, later presented an in-depth overview of Thailand’s current legal framework regulating AI, followed by a panel discussion with three speakers: Brendan Pat, managing counsel and data protection officer at online travel agency Agoda; Maprang Sombatthai, legal director at mobile messaging platform LINE; and Pongnut Thanaboonchai, regulatory manager at fintech payments platform Stripe.
The discussion explored how AI is leveraged within their organisations, assessing the opportunities and challenges it presents to both the corporate sector and wider society. Additionally, the panellists shared compelling narratives on the innovative use of AI in their businesses, and the meticulous risk management practices they employ.
The event culminated in a lively reception at the Standard Hotel where attendees networked and exchanged ideas for a memorable end to the successful event fostering intellectual discourse on AI and its legal implications in Southeast Asia.
