Litigator Daniel Chia joins Prolegis, a Herbert Smith Freehills (HSF) alliance law firm in Singapore, as a director and head of litigation, and brings on board a trio of lawyers from his previous firm, Morgan Lewis.
In his new venture, Chia sets up a litigation team with the support of Jonathan Tang and Ker Yanguang, who both join Prolegis as directors, and Charlene Wee who comes on board as an associate.
Chia, previously at Morgan Lewis as a director for the past 12 years, has represented multinational and Singaporean companies, private capital funds, tech firms (mainly in payments and cryptocurrency services), and high net-worth individuals.
He regularly appears before the Singapore High Court, the Court of Appeal and the Singapore International Commercial Court in major commercial disputes, arbitration-linked cases, and restructuring and insolvency proceedings.
Herbert Smith Freehills’ Singapore managing partner, Fatim Jumabhoy, said Chua’s arrival is a major milestone in the firm’s investment plans for the region. “To meet growing client demand, we will continue to target the best lateral hires, nurture our longstanding alliance relationships and develop our existing talent.”
Prolegis is Singapore’s boutique corporate and commercial law firm founded in 2012 by its managing director, corporate lawyer Ban Leong Oo, and established a formal law alliance with Herbert Smith Freehills in 2015.
In the new office, Chia will work closely through the formal law alliance with Herbert Smith Freehills’ disputes practice led by Southeast Asia managing partner Alastair Henderson, with the support of a 14-member disputes team in Singapore.
