Jack Liu

Introduction

Jack Liu is a partner and executive committee member of BZW Law Firm. He also serves as Secretary-General of the International Zhongwen Division; Director of the National IP Committee; and Head of the Cybersecurity & Data Protection Practice. He is appointed as a postgraduate supervisor at several leading universities, and frequently advises industry associations and think tanks.

With a solid interdisciplinary background, Liu holds a Master of Laws in Civil and Commercial Law from the China University of Political Science and Law, and a Master of Engineering from the University of Siegen in Germany. He previously worked in advanced R&D roles at Volkswagen Group Germany, and the IBM Cloud Computing Centre, gaining firsthand experience with complex technologies before transitioning to legal practice. He later joined King & Wood Mallesons, where he focused on IP litigation and technology-related disputes.

Liu has extensive experience in patent, trademark, copyright, unfair competition and trade secrets litigation. He has represented multinational and domestic companies including Huawei, Apple, Sony, Alibaba, JD.com and major state-owned conglomerates. Several of his cases have been selected as Top 10 IP cases and other influential judicial decisions by courts and authoritative institutions.

On the advisory side, he serves as long-term counsel to China Development Bank, the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics Organising Committee, and Yum China (KFC/Pizza Hut), providing legal services covering IP strategy, data compliance, AI governance, information security, cross-border risk control and compliance systems.

Liu has received multiple honours including Beijing Model Worker; IPR Daily Top 50 IP Lawyers Under 50; and GCP Top 30 IP Experts. In 2025, he contributed to drafting the Generative AI IP Governance Guidelines, demonstrating his leadership in emerging technology and regulation. He is frequently interviewed by media such as China Daily, Caixin and China IP News, and has published on IP protection, data governance and AI compliance.
