While the global economic downturn may have hit many business sectors hard, law firms appear to be holding their heads above water, while some are even experiencing a flood of new work.
In India, law firms are increasingly being called upon to assist companies involved in the wide scale retrenchment of staff, or to settle disputes over deals that have gone bad as a result of the economic crisis.
Labour lawyers especially have been kept busy, formulating strategies for employers to reduce their workforces without violating India’s onerous labour laws and regulations. “We have advised several companies regarding the policies on the Indian retrenchment law,” said FoxMandal Little partner Dharmesh Srivastava.
