Introduction

Zhang Zhanjiang serves as a partner at the Beijing headquarters of Jingtian & Gongcheng. He holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and possesses dual expertise in natural sciences and intellectual property law. His career spans scientific research (Chinese Academy of Sciences), patent examination (formerly SIPO, now the China National Intellectual Property Administration, or CNIPA) and legal services. He has served at three leading “Red Circle” law firms in China, accumulating nearly 15 years of intellectual property experience.

As a cross-qualified IP expert with credentials as an attorney-at-law and patent attorney, Zhang specialises in strategic IP protection for advanced materials, chemical industries and medical devices. His practice focuses on IP litigation, trade secret protection, IP due diligence, and corporate IP compliance system construction, delivering full-lifecycle solutions from R&D to commercialisation.

Zhang has extensive IP litigation experience, excelling in complex technology-law interface cases. Cases handled by Zhang have been repeatedly selected as: Top 10 IP Cases of the Year by Chinese Courts; CNIPA’s Top 10 Re-examination/Invalidation Cases; Supreme People’s Court’s Seed Industry IP Judicial Protection Cases; and Top 10 Judicial Cases on Patent Authorisation and Validity.

Zhang actively contributes to IP public service, appointed by IP Protection Centres across 20-plus provincial jurisdictions in China as an expert adviser for IP dispute resolution. He is also recognised as a Recommended IP lawyer by The Legal 500, and featured in China Business Law Journal’s The A-List: Growth Drivers, highlighting his professional excellence and industry influence.

Zhang is deeply versed in intellectual property theory, having authored over 60 scholarly articles in authoritative journals such as Chinese Invention & Patent and China Intellectual Property, as well as new media platforms, advancing discourse on IP strategy and innovation policy.
