Introduction

Angell Xi has 26 years of experience in legal and multinational corporation business management, with a solid combination of private practice and 12 years’ in-house experience, including as general counsel for GE Intelligent Platforms and Ashland in Asia, chief compliance counsel for Kering Asia and counsel for Michelin China.

Xi is a recognised expert in art & culture, luxury & fashion, IP licensing and private clients, in addition to the fields of outbound investment, cross-border M&A, retail, wholesale and franchising, among others.

She is co-chair of the IBA Art, Cultural Institution and Heritage Law Committee, a board member of Licensing International, a member of the IBA Private Client and Individual Tax Committee, a member of the Art Law Foundation and the Responsible Art Market (The RAM). Xi was appointed as postgraduate tutor for KoGuan Law School, Shanghai Jiaotong University and has lectured at Christie’s Institute of Education for years. Xi is one of the first lawyers to advise on AI, non-fungible tokens, and the metaverse in the art, culture, luxury and fashion industries, as well as in the field of philanthropy.

As a leader in art law, Xi is proficient in advising global and local art business and projects, providing clients with solutions in respect of art creation, transaction, collection, promotion, protection, art finance, investment, art for philanthropy, art business operations, licensing, performance, etc., to support clients’ business growth and success, and to empower them with legal expertise and business acumen. Art clients Xi advises include: world-class international and Chinese museums, cultural heritage, conservation and restoration institutions, art research and educational institutions, other non-profit organisations; China’s cultural and tourism governmental authorities; galleries, agencies, dealers and other art business operators; auction houses; art investment and finance institutions such as art funds, trustee companies; individual, corporate and family office collectors; Chinese and overseas art foundations; adjacent art business operators, such as e-commerce platforms, media and art technology companies; art and culture IP licensors, licensees, agencies; artists, studios, performing art artists and players; families of artists.

Xi is co-author of The Art Law, The Art Law Review, The Art Collecting Legal Handbook (Third Edition), The Luxury and Fashion Law, The Trademark Law, The Private Client Law, published annually in the U.K. since 2018, and The Practice of Media and Entertainment Law.
