International law firm Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has advised investment management company Japan Activation Capital (JAC) on the formation and launch of a series of funds, which raised a total of JPY235 billion (USD1.4 billion).

JAC is backed by a diverse group of institutional investors, financial institutions, including major banks, insurance companies, government-affiliated funds, a university endowment and an overseas investor.

Under its latest fund series, the company secured new commitments from investors such as Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, alongside additional investments from existing backers including Ashikaga Bank.

The Simpson Thacher team was led by partners David Azcue, who co-heads the firm’s private funds practice in Japan and supervises the Asia private funds practice, and Xue Zhang, alongside senior associate Li Jiang.

JAC focuses on making minority investments in large- and mid-cap companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
