Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co (SAM) advised India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) on a USD100 million deal involving power purchase and implementation agreements for a 50MW solar plant in Sri Lanka, marking a significant step in regional energy co-operation.
Partner Prashant Sirohi led the transaction team, assisted by senior associate Tinnish Sharma and associate Madhvi Vangani. Partners Anoop Rawat and Sagar Dhawan advised on security matters.
The project is a strategic partnership with the Sri Lankan government to strengthen India’s presence in the South Asian energy sector.
Under the transaction, Trincomalee Power Company Limited — a 50:50 joint venture between NTPC Limited (NTPC’s new name) and the Ceylon Electricity Board of Sri Lanka — will lead the development of the solar plant and oversee the associated transmission infrastructure.
This initiative advances renewable energy goals and reinforces bilateral energy collaboration between India and Sri Lanka, highlighting the growing role of sustainable infrastructure in regional diplomacy.
NTPC Limited is an Indian public sector undertaking involved in generating electricity and other activities.
