Introduction

Angell Xi has nearly 30 years’ experience in legal and business management, a combination of private practice and 12 years of in-house experience, including as Asia-Pacific general counsel for GE Intelligent Platforms and Ashland, a chief compliance officer for Kering Asia, and counsel for Michelin China. Xi came from a dual educational background in law and English language and literature, and was a selected participant for the EU-China Legal and Judicial Co-operation programme in 2002.

Xi is a recognised expert in art and culture, luxury and fashion, IP licensing, private client and family office services, as well as outbound investment and cross-border transactions.

Xi is a co-chair of the International Bar Association’s art, cultural institution and heritage law committee, a board member of Licensing International, and a director of Shanghai Law Society’s art law committee. She was appointed as a postgraduate tutor for KoGuan Law School, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Wuhan University Law School, and has for years been lecturing at the Christie’s Institute of Art, China Academy of Fine Art, Tongji University, East China University of Political Science and Law. Xi is a contributor for The Art Basel and UBS Global Art Market Report 2024, a co-author of The Art Collecting Legal Handbook, The Practice of Media and Entertainment Law, The Art Law, The Art Law Review, The Luxury and Fashion Law, and The Private Client Law, among others. She is one of the first lawyers who advised on AI, non-fungible tokens, Web 3.0 projects in respect of the art, culture, luxury and fashion industries, as well as in the field of philanthropy. Xi is also a frequent award winner in the fields of art law, entertainment law, IP, digital economy, as well as private and family wealth management.

As a leader in her areas of practice, Xi is proficient in advising global and local clients with solutions in art creation, transaction, operation, collection, art wealth management, art finance, art for philanthropy, including structuring, establishment, governance and management of family trusts, special-purpose vehicles, foundations and other non-profit organisations to support the sustainability of art as well as family wealth transfer and legacy inheritance, to guide and safeguard clients to achieve their objectives and needs, with rights and interests well protected.
