US firm Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan has expanded its cross-border dispute resolution offering in Japan with the addition of international litigation specialist Hisaya Kimura, who left Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu at the start of July, as a partner, Asia Business Law Journal has learned.

Kimura, who is admitted in Japan and New York, began his legal career as an associate in 1985 at the offices of the late Ekizo Fujibayashi, a former chief justice of the Supreme Court.

When Kimura moved to Quinn Emanuel’s Tokyo office, he was a senior counsel at Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu, where he joined as an associate in 1993 (then Nagashima & Ohno) after a two-year stint as a foreign associate at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy. During his more than 30-year career at the Japanese firm, he had also served as a partner between 1996 and 2023, focusing on international disputes, including foreign litigation and international arbitration primarily for Japanese companies.

The cross-border disputes veteran, who has also represented local and foreign companies in Japanese courts, sat on Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu’s management committee for a decade and was directly involved in managing the firm.

At the Tokyo office of Quinn Emanuel, which does not practice local law in Japan, Kimura will shift his work to advising Japanese companies on global matters, especially international arbitration and US litigation, a spokesperson for the US firm tells Asia Business Law Journal.

Kimura will be working alongside Ryan Goldstein, the managing partner of Quinn Emanuel’s Tokyo office, who specialises in complex business litigation and is admitted in California.
