Tae Uk KANG

Introduction

Tae Uk KANG is the head of the TMT team at Bae, Kim & Lee (BKL) in Seoul, Korea. He is also a senior partner of the IP practice group.

Prior to joining BKL in 2007, he worked as a judge in several district courts. KANG not only provides advisory services but also practices in civil and/or criminal litigation areas regarding data protection, TMT, IP disputes and all legal matters related to the internet service providers such as e-commerce and online game industry.

On data protection matters, he has advised many Korean conglomerate groups such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, SK Hynix and multinational companies including Spotify, Twitter, Kering Group, Ralph Lauren, Chanel and Swarovski on diverse data protection issues and personal information protection compliance issues. He also advises many companies in e-commerce, consumer goods, pharmaceutical and gaming industries responding to investigations by the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC), etc., and in data protection-related civil/criminal disputes. He is also focusing and advising many clients on AI-related matters as well as blockchain, NFT and metaverse issues.

In addition, KANG has been an advisory counsel at the PIPC for several years, frequently advises the Korea Internet & Security Agency and the National Information Society Agency, and serves as a member of several expert/advisory committees related to data practice areas including the Open Data Mediation Committee, the Copyright Protection and Deliberation Committee, and the Financial Security Institute. KANG was awarded Data Privacy Lawyer of the Year by the Asia Legal Awards 2020. KANG is a member of the New York Bar as well as the Korean and Seoul Bar.
