Introduction

Safir Anand is senior partner and head of trademarks and contractual and commercial IP at Anand and Anand.

He is recognized as one of India’s top intellectual property attorneys and has over 25 years of experience in advising and representing clients from diverse industries – from fast-moving consumer goods to pharmaceuticals, software, social media, food, media, sports, entertainment, luxury, fashion and government. His inputs on strategy, business models, marketing and commercial insights are blended with an astute understanding of IP law that encompasses IP protection, IP enforcement, IP agreements, licensing, franchising, monetization, strategic advisory and due diligence.

Mr Anand was a member of the International Trademark Association’s (INTA) Presidential Task Force and at present serves on INTA’s Commercialisation of Brands Committee and its first Research Advisory Council.

He has also recently been invited to join the leadership team of the Commercialisation of Brands Committee and to co-chair the Global Brand Transactions and Due Diligence Sub- Committees. He has been appointed to the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s (FICCI) IP Rights Committee and is part of FICCI IP forum, and as vice chair of ASSOCHAM’s IP Rights Managing Committee.

Mr Anand has recently been recognized as ‘Innovative Practitioner’by Financial Times Innovative Lawyers (Asia-Pacific) 2020; ‘Elite Practitioner’ in IP by Asialaw Leading Lawyers 2021; and ‘Global Leader’ by World Trademark Review Global Leaders 2020. He has been ranked among the world’s leading IP strategists by IAM – Strategy 300. Under his aegis, the firm won the Luxury Law Award 2020 in the Independent Luxury Law Firm of the Year category.

Mr Anand has greatly contributed to International Franchise Association, International Licensing Merchandisers’ Association’s India, Franchise India, National Restaurant Association of India, etc. He shared his insights with leading national and international publications and forums such as:
