Introduction
Srinath Sridevan is a sixth-generation lawyer, and is a founding partner of the Chennai-based firm, HSB Partners.
He studied law at the Madras Law College (as it was then called) and represented his college at the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in 1994, and went on to reach the semi-finals.
He graduated with a gold medal in the state of Tamil Nadu, and went on to do his master’s in law at New York University in New York.
After an internship with Deacons in Hong Kong, he was awarded the British government’s Chevening Scholarship to study law in England. Thereafter, he worked at Allen & Overy in London, after which he returned to India to form HSB Partners.
HSB Partners is a full-service law firm and has grown to be one of the premier law firms in South India.
He devotes a substantial amount of his time to pro bono work, and especially works with the Safai Karamchari Andolan, filing public interest litigations to improve the lot of manual scavengers and their families. His work on manual scavenging recently resulted in substantial relief being granted by the Tamil Nadu government.
Srinath frequently publishes articles on law and the judiciary with his most recent article being one on federalism in the judiciary. He has published articles in the Supreme Court Cases, the Madras Law Weekly, the Madras Law Journal, besides newspapers like The Hindu.
He also devotes time to mentoring one or two promising law students each year. This mentoring includes not only a skill-focused internship, but also all guidance thereafter as the students may require.
Having completed 27 years at the bar, as of 2022, he is one of the sought-after names for commercial litigation in Chennai.
