Esguerra served as undersecretary of the Department of Justice from 1992 to 1995. He is a professor of criminal law, remedial law and IP law in various law schools in the Philippines, and has been invited to lecture on these subjects in various bar review centres and Mandatory Continuing Legal Education programmes.
He was also a member of committees formed by the Supreme Court to revise various rules of procedure, such as the 2019 Proposed Amendments to the 1997 Rules of Civil Procedure; 2020 Revised Rules of Procedure for Intellectual Property Cases; and currently the Revision of the Rules on Criminal Procedure.
He actively supports the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, where he once served as governor for the South Luzon region, and other professional associations as officer, adviser and/or director, including the Licensing Executives Society of the Philippines and the Intellectual Property Association of the Philippines, in both of which he served as president. He is also a trained arbitrator of the Philippine Dispute Resolution, Inc.
