Introduction

Junayed Ahmed Chowdhury is the managing partner of Vertex Chambers. He is a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, and a barrister-at-law of the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, London, UK. Chowdhury is author of the leading Bangladeshi practitioners’ textbook Corporate Tax Law and Practice (First edition published by Mullick Brothers in 2015 and Second Edition published by University Press in 2021), which has been catalogued by, among others, the British Library, Harvard Law School, Columbia University, Yale University, Princeton University and the University of Chicago Law School. He has also authored the leading (and the first bilingual) practitioners’ book on arbitration titled Commentaries on the Law of Arbitration in Bangladesh (published by University Press in 2024). The celebrated former Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud commended this publication. The book has been catalogued by the British Library, the University of Chicago D’Angelo Law Library and Lincoln’s Inn Library.

With more than 21 years of legal experience, Chowdhury specialises in corporate and international taxation, legislative drafting, corporate and commercial law, litigation and arbitration. The leading international law firm directory, Legal 500, has ranked him as a Leading Partner in Dispute Resolution and quoted him as possessing “vast knowledge and is very professional”. Chowdhury is one of the draftsmen of the Secured Transaction (Moveable Property) Act 2023. He is also co-author of the Bangladesh chapter in the pre-eminent book Secured Transaction Law in Asia, published by Hart Publishing in 2021. He was a member (and the only lawyer) on the Bangladesh government’s Review Committee to draft the Income Tax Act 2023. Chowdhury has been a visiting research fellow at the University of Connecticut Law School, US, and the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, London, and has lectured on corporate taxation, venture capital, private equity and arbitration as a guest faculty at the Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka, and Chittagong Independent University.
