Introduction

James JY Chen is a partner and senior M&A/corporate finance lawyer based in the Taipei office of a global law firm K&L Gates. He represents a broad range of clients, including multi-national corporations, private equity and venture capital firms, financial institutions, and industrial companies in Taiwan, mainland China, Singapore, and Indonesia, in their cross-border mergers around the world. His experience in corporate finance transactions includes public offerings and private placements of equity, debt, convertible and other securities in the US, Taiwan, and other capital markets, export credit facilities, bank loans, securitisation of accounts receivable, trade facilities, derivatives, and other structured financing transactions. Chen has also worked in New York, Hong Kong, and Singapore in private practice and for a Southeast Asia-based conglomerate.

Chen is recognised as an eminent practitioner in capital markets and corporate/M&A in Taiwan by the Chambers Guides (ranked 15 years) and as a leading individual by The Legal 500 Asia Pacific Guide (2021–2023).

Chen holds an LLB from National Taiwan University, an LLM from Cornell Law School, and a JD (cum laude) from Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law.
