Introduction
Kris Gargantiel is one of Asia Business Law Journal’s Top 100 Lawyers in the Philippines for six consecutive years. He is a graduate of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Faculty of Civil Law. He was admitted to the Philippine Bar in 2004. In his sixth year as a lawyer, he founded the Gargantiel Law Office, which has now grown into a medium-sized full-service law firm, Gargantiel Ilagan and Atanante (GIA Law).
He is the legal counsel of a leading broadsheet and publishing corporation in the country, non-government organisations, and organisations from the business process outsourcing, real estate development, and software development industries. He assists them in corporate, labour and tax matters, and in litigation cases.
He is also an academic. He teaches criminal law at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) College of Law, and administrative law, law on public officers, election law, and public corporations (local government) at the UST Faculty of Civil Law.
Gargantiel lectures on criminal law and public corporations in the Mandatory Continuing Legal Education for lawyers.
For more than a decade, he taught obligations and contracts, corporation law, labour law, constitutional law, persons and family relations, partnership, agency, sales and negotiable instruments. Before teaching at UST and PLM, he was a professor at the University of Makati and the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). In PUP, he also served as one of its university legal counsel.
He previously served as a member of the board of directors of the Quezon City chapter of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, and was a volunteer lawyer of its legal aid team. Gargantiel is a resource person in various law-oriented webinars on social media, and programmes on national television.
From 2018 to 2023, he was a member of the board of directors of DBP Data Centre, Inc, the only government-owned and controlled corporation with a mandate to provide IT services. He then briefly served as one of the assistant secretaries in the Office of the Senior Deputy Executive Secretary, Office of the President, Malacañang.
