Introduction

Imtiaz Uddin Ahmad Asif obtained his LLB degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the UK, in 2000. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales by the Honourable Society of Lincoln’s Inn, London, in July 2001. Asif is enrolled as an advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

Asif is involved in commercial (including M&A), banking and company law matters. Asif’s expertise includes advising clients in the areas of gas and oil exploration, power generation and telecommunications, foreign investment, joint ventures, and other contractual and commercial matters. He is actively involved in banking law and corporate finance work drafting documentation for various syndicated loans.

Asif has undertaken a large amount of advisory work for corporate clients on negotiation and review of contracts, international trade, banking regulations, corporate compliance, joint venture agreements, corporate finance arrangements, establishing companies, securitisation and taxation. Asif is experienced in litigation and arbitration and has a sizeable legal practice in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

In 2020-2021, Asif acted as legal counsel in numerous leading projects, including advising BNG Global Malaysia in the establishment of the first low and medium-income housing project undertaken on a public-private partnership (PPP) basis in Bangladesh, advising a China-Bangladesh joint venture on the review and execution of PPP contract for largest private water purification and distribution PPP projects in Bangladesh, reviewing and drafting of (engineering, procurement and construction) EPC contract on behalf of Bangladesh army in the execution of EPC contract for physical protection system for Bangladesh’s first nuclear power plant, etc.

Asif has successfully represented and acted as local legal counsel for Petorbangla, BAPEX and the Government of Bangladesh in the arbitration case held at the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) against Niko Resources. Asif was appointed as an assistant attorney general in the landmark case of “Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, father of the nation, murder case” at the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.

Asif is a commissioner at the International Cricket Council (ICC) Code of Conduct Commission and regularly attends hearings in proceedings brought under the ICC Code of Conduct.
