Sanjeev Gemawat, who spent more than two years at the energy giant Vedanta Resources as group general counsel, has left to join the Essar Group.

“I was seeking a platform where I could contribute meaningfully to large-scale transformation,” said Gemawat who will take up the role of managing director and group general counsel at Essar.

“I see this as more than just a professional move – it’s about contributing to a vision that has a real, positive impact on society and the environment. I am eager to bring my expertise to this dynamic institution and work alongside a talented team to drive change.”

Gemawat will lead legal strategy across Essar’s diverse business, ensure compliance, risk management and support the group’s long-term goals. He says the role will involve advising on complex transactions, steering legal frameworks for new ventures and working closely with the leadership team to integrate legal considerations into the decision-making process.

He hopes to contribute to the group’s “vision of decarbonisation, decentralisation and digitalisation, while playing a key role in shaping its future growth”.

Gemawat has more than 30 years of industry experience. Prior to Vedanta, he was the group general counsel and company secretary at Dalmia Bharat Group, and was the executive vice-president at real estate firm DLF India. He is also the co-founder of the General Counsels Association of India.

Essar is one of India’s largest conglomerates operating in various sectors from energy, infrastructure, metals and mining to technology and retail
