The Competition Appellate Tribunal (COMPAT) has set aside a Competition Commission of India (CCI) order which penalized the Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA) for forming a cartel with the Gunny Traders Association (GTA) to fix prices and control production of jute bags. A total of 25 officers of IJMA were also penalized for overseeing IJMA’s conduct during the period of investigation.
The Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA) and the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories (NFCSF) provided information to the CCI in 2011 alleging that IJMA and GTA had acted as cartel in the market for packaging material for sugar and other products. They were supported by All India Flat Tape Manufacturers Association (AIFTMA) – competitors of jute mills in manufacturing packaging material used by the sugar, cement and other industries.
