Unprecedented demand for legal work has created an acute shortage of lawyers. International law firms have exacerbated the problem by storming the Indian recruitment market
Dinesh Sharma reports

The dramatic increase in legal work in India over the last few years underscores the rapid growth in virtually every sector of the economy. Corporate lawyers are in demand like never before and India’s legal profession is now suffering from a grave shortage of talent. This has created a new and pressing challenge for law firms and in-house legal departments alike: How to attract good lawyers.

The shortage of lawyers is compounded by the fact that international law firms and legal process outsourcers have entered the domestic recruitment market. UK firms in particular have been recruiting heavily in India, often taking lawyers out of the country to work in offices in London, Hong Kong or Singapore. This practice may eventually pay dividends when a large number of internationally trained lawyers return home. But in the short term, it is exacerbating a situation that has already become critical.

The difficulty in recruiting high-calibre lawyers has given rise to a second challenge: Retention. Law firms are now struggling to retain their best associates, support staff and even partners. Poaching between firms has become rampant and employers are being forced to look at all areas of the employment package to find new and innovative ways of retaining their key staff.
