Introduction

Mrinal Kumar is a partner with Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co, and specialises in areas of general corporate, retail and real estate. Mrinal has worked extensively in the real estate practice, and is an acknowledged leader in this area. He has advised on structuring mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, foreign direct investment laws, land acquisitions, and local land laws in various states across India, as well as commercial leasing, settling, and negotiating the transaction documents for large domestic and international clients for real estate.

Mrinal has been recognised as a Band 1 lawyer for real estate by Chambers and Partners from 2016-2023 and has also been recognised as a Leading Lawyer for construction and real estate by the Legal 500 in 2018-2019 and 2021-2022. He has consistently been adjudged as one of the leading real estate lawyers in India by Asialaw Leading Lawyers from 2010-2022. He was recognised in India Business Law Journal’s A-List of India’s top lawyers in 2019, 2021 and 2022 and as a “Distinguished Practitioner” for construction and real estate, Asialaw profiles, 2023.

Mrinal has advised the government of India, the Ministry of Housing & Urban Poverty Alleviation on various legislations such as the Real Estate (Regulation & Development) Bill, 2011; the Model Tenancy Act, 2015; and the Draft Model Contract for PPP in Housing Sector.

Mrinal has been involved in various transactions related to FDI in the retail sector, matters related to development of SEZs, commercial premises and integrated township and has been part of various deals requiring environmental clearances.

Prior to joining the firm in 2006, Mrinal was working with AZB & Partners, Delhi. He has received his bachelor’s degree in law form Symbiosis Law College, Pune (University of Pune).
