Ashwath Rau is a senior partner of AZB and a member of its management committee with over 22 years of experience. Chambers has consistently rated him in Band 1 for both Corporate/M&A and private equity.
His recent recognition includes “Lawyer of the Year – M&A” by IFLR1000, one of the “Top 15 M&A Lawyers in India” by ALB and “Dealmaker of the Year” by ALB India Law Awards (all for 2021). He was ranked No. 1 by deal volume for India in the Mergermarket Individual League Tables (2019), ranked No. 2 by deal count globally in the Mergermarket Individual League Tables (2020) and ranked No. 1 of the Top 100 Corporate Deal Makers of the Year in The Legal 50 published by Legally India (2018-19). Recent deals that he led work on: (a) USD4.7 billion sale by Visa of its stake in BillDesk to PayU (2021) (the largest deal in India’s booming Fintech sector); (b) USD2.5 billion investment by Total SA in Adani Green Energy (2021); (c) USD20.6 billion investment by 13 globally reputed strategic and financial investors in Jio Platforms Ltd in India’s largest FDI yet (2020); and (d) USD1.5 billion first successful hostile bid in India by Larsen & Toubro to acquire a controlling stake in Mindtree Ltd, a listed IT services/consulting company (2019).
