Introduction

Mark J Harty obtained his AB degree in East Asian Studies from Harvard College and his JD degree from Harvard Law School. He is admitted to the bar in the State of New York. He has extensive experience in complex, multi-jurisdictional matters. His practice focuses on M&A, syndicated lending, project finance and other bank finance including ship and aircraft finance, insurance, private equity, derivatives and structured finance, capital markets, foreign direct investment, and debt restructuring.

Prior to joining LCS & Partners, Harty worked with Shearman & Sterling for approximately 20 years in New York, Hong Kong, Taipei, Beijing, Tokyo and Singapore and at various times was the managing lawyer in charge of the Taipei, Beijing and Tokyo offices. His experience includes nine years as a senior attorney in Shearman & Sterling’s project development and finance team during which he worked on drafting, negotiating and financing engineering, procurement, and construction, operations and maintenances, and other project documents for multiple projects in China, Taiwan, the Philippines, South Korea, Vietnam and Thailand.

Harty’s experience includes advising in connection with numerous major infrastructure projects around the globe including the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Plant, Three Gorges Dam, Three Gorges Transmission Network, Ling Ao Nuclear Power Plant, Qinshan Phase III Nuclear Power Plant, multiple power plant projects in the Philippines and China, petrochemical projects in Taiwan and China, and solar power and offshore wind projects in Taiwan.

He has also worked on major debt restructuring projects in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Thailand and Indonesia, including representing the Steering Committee of creditors of Asia Pulp & Paper in the restructuring of approximately USD7 billion of debt.

Harty has lived and worked in Asia for over 37 years and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. He has been recognised as a leading lawyer in banking, M&A, project finance and venture capital and private equity transactions by various publications.

Harty also has served on the boards of two major international law firm networks, World Services Group (six years including one year as Chairman), and ALFA International (two years).
