Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly moving beyond the experimental phase to become a core element of both daily operations and long-term strategy within legal organisations, says Junwon Kim, representative director of Thomson Reuters Korea.

Kim delivered the opening speech of the Korea Legal Tech Forum 2026, held at Conrad Seoul on 9 June 2026. Law.asia attended the event as an official media partner.

“While AI was initially used primarily for basic tasks such as search and translation, its application is now rapidly expanding across core legal workflows, including reviewing case law and statutes, analysing contracts, drafting documents, conducting legal research, and performing compliance checks,” said Kim.

He identified three key trends driving these practical shifts: automating repetitive tasks, enhancing information access and workflow efficiency, and fundamentally transforming the delivery of legal services.

He added that these three developments had enabled both in-house legal teams and law firms to make decisions more quickly and efficiently.

“Organisations that use AI effectively are moving beyond treating it as a simple support tool and are increasingly adopting data-driven operating models that incorporate risk prediction and proactive response capabilities.”

The Korea Legal Tech Forum 2026 was attended by around 250 in-house counsel, private practice lawyers and those from academia. The sponsors for the event included LawForm and BoostDraft, while Kim & Chang, Yoon & Yang, DLG Law Corporation, LIN, Channel Talk and WizBase participated in the event as well.
